5/31/08

1. Quick shopping at Kohl's with a $5 coupon I had. Didn't find exactly what I wanted, but got a shirt for $4.

2. T's soccer game--THEY WON!!!!!!!! (yes, the first win of the year, I believe) and they won soundly--9 to 3, I think!

3. Lunch and end-of-year-planning with some 4th grade moms--which was both productive AND fun!

4. First walk (of the year) to the elementary school playground; we do this a lot after supper when looking for something to do, but this is the first time this year we've made it.

5/30/08

1. Got to sleep in this morning while G. got the kids ready for school

2. Although still not as good as I'd like and hope, my practice GRE test scores did improve as I took more practice tests today.

3. Got to help out at "May Day Games" at C's middle school; it was a fun, team-building event that matched up 6, 7 and 8th graders in cooperative games; there are so few volunteer opportunities at the middle school that it's nice to be able to help when there are some!

4. Coffee and catch-up with a dear friend who I hadn't spoken to at length for a long time; hearing many of her trials with her ex-husband sure made me happy for my life, too.

5/29/08

1. Our post-remediation radon test results came back: <0.4 pCi/L!!! WOO HOO!

2. I had a meeting with the UWM College of Nursing, which went better than I thought--I would only need to take 6 classes before being admitted to the clinical program. I could be a RN/BSN in May of 2011. This whole prospect was really quite exciting--especially hearing the classes I'd be taking (including having to re-take Microbiology--my favorite undergrad class!). OK, so at 11:00 am, I decided to go back to school to be a nurse.

3. I came home and sat down with G. and talked about my career possibilities and whined about the cost of going back for nursing, my fears about not knowing if I'd like it, and how I can't decide what I want to do. We kind of worked out that it would probably make the most sense for me to take my GRE's, apply to the Chem. Ed. Master's program, and at least start that. I might find that I love it, and even if I don't love it, I'll have (hopefully) taken enough classes to renew my teaching license, so nothing lost. And we talked about how, though the SCHOOLING required to become a nurse is way more interesting to me than the schooling required for me to renew my teaching license or get the Chem Ed degree, that the actual JOB obtained after the schooling really is the more important thing--you only take classes a few years, but will potentially have a job 25+ years. And Chem Ed would allow me to teach at the college level--much easier to do parttime, shorter semesters, not dealing with the discipline issues, etc. like at the High School level, etc. So at about noon, I've decided that I'll go back to school and get my Master's in Chem Ed.

4. After arriving at THAT conclusion, I went to the HS to look at some tests that a tutoring client of mine took so I can help her review for her final. While I'm doing that, one of the Chem teachers (the only member of the Science dept. still there from when I taught) came in and asked me when I was coming back to teach. He then told me that it was a good thing for him to be teaching in the district where his kids went to school, and talked up the job in general. I told him that it all sounded nice, but it's not like there's even an opening. Then he said that he's planning to retire in 5 years or less... So now it's 2:30 and I'm back to deciding to just substitute, pick up my 6 credits to renew my teaching license, and go back to teaching HS Science...

5. C's Orchestra concert--another joint Middle School/High School concert and it's so neat to see the progression. The older sister of one of C's friends (she's a Senior) played a solo on the cello and it was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes. Wow!

5/28/08

1. Shopping (by myself) at Target and Old Navy. Although I didn't find exactly what I was looking for at ON, I did get two cute tops for $2 after my coupon; also found shirts for T. and M. ($2 and $3) at Target.

2. Family Fun Night at the elementary school; okay, it's stretching things for this to be something that made me happy, but it made the KIDS happy, so...

3. Last minute cancellation on tutoring--which was nice because I'm SOOOOO tired, and it also allowed me to stay longer with the other student I was working with tonight.

5/27/08

1. T's orchestra recital/solo performances; each of the kids got to choose a piece or two to perform; he was the only one (other than kids who played scales) who had his song memorized!

2. Found out that it will only cost $250 to get the gigantic birch tree taken down (it's the one infected by Carpenter ants last year; dying bit-by-bit; G. keeps climbing up and cutting down the dead branches, but now there's some over the house and the driveway and...) p.s. if you click on the photo to enlarge it, you can see the radon pipe sticking out of the roof, too
3. T. had a good well-child check; he's 89#, 56 3/4" and got the varicella vaccine with no tears!

Monday, May 26, 2008

5/26/08

1. Bleaching T's hair; and how, after it was done, he did, "I'm Lank Thompson. I'm a handsome man" from SNL...

2. Getting platinum on AI karaoke on expert level TWICE (Lips of an Angel and Sister Christian)

3. Seeing the cute pics from the birthday party C. attended Saturday night; such a great group of girls!
(they got real, professional manicures)

4. Memorial Day cookout at G's brother's house; the cousins are so cute together!

Sunday, May 25, 2008

5/25/08

1. T. finished his essay for his literature circle with very few tears

2. G. moved a shrub from an awkward place (halfway IN the swingset) to a better place (partially blocking the compost bin), which saved us at least $30 for the cost of a new shrub.

3. Mother-Daughter Book Club; we read "The Glass Castle" and had a great discussion and wonderfully fun make-your-own salads (Caesar or Greek). M-D Book Club is such a neat idea and it's just a fantastic group of girls and moms.

4. C. and I ran to the mall for something to do and because I, for some reason, have long-sleeved shirts and no-sleeved shirts (tanks), but no short sleeved shirts! I found one top (which I got for "free" since I still had money on my Boston Store gift card from my birthday) and when I tried it on, G. said it was REALLY cute. bonus!

5. Made curry for supper; though the guys don't eat it, I usually make it about once a month. C. and I just adore it, and I read somewhere that curry wards off Alzheimer's.

Saturday, May 24, 2008

5/24/08

1. Coffee out with friends who also have 13 YO daughters; the girls shopped for a birthday gift for a fourth friend while we three moms chatted. It's so nice to have great friends who have great daughters for C. to be friends with!

2. G. finished painting (except for touch-ups) the house; when we had the addition put on, the siding for the addition came in stock colors, so we had to re-paint the rest of the house to match the stock colored vinyl siding on the addition. We painted in a hurry last year, and a LOT of it bubbled or peeled over the winter. G. did all the fixing this spring--scraping, priming and now painting. But on the bright side, the new color looks WAY better with the Lannon Stone of the rest of the house!

3. G. invited friends to an impromptu cookout; I had just been complaining about not having friends over, so I was happy that he did. This also *forced* me to clean the whole house at once--an it needed it!

4. The cookout itself--I continually feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends and neighbors. (and good sports--despite being forced to play American Idol with me...)

5/23/08

1. Fun day at the park with the K4 moms, despite freezing my butt off! And M. was running around without a jacket the whole time!

2. Supper out (for T's birthday) with G's parents; G and I had "Fajitas for two" and make goofy, sappy, snuggly comments throughout supper

3. M. is doing lots of math in her head and it's fun to see/hear; she explained how if you cut a piece of toast into four parts and ate three of them, you'd have 1/4 left, and would have eaten 3/4. Then she also said, if you ate two of them, it would be 2/4, but you don't say 2/4, you say 1/2 because 2/4 is the same as 1/2; at supper today she said, "24 plus 24 is 48, right?" and on the way home she counted by 2's through the 70's until we asked her to stop and count by 3's (which morphed into all of us singing the Schoolhouse Rock "Three Is A Magic Number"...)

4. The family played American Idol Karaoke Revolution and *I* am the next American Idol, thankyouverymuch!

Thursday, May 22, 2008

5/22/08

1. Coffee out with G. in celebration of him being done with Spring semester!

2. Some yard work--including G. removing the HUGE stump from the arbor vitae I chopped down last fall (and kept tripping over)

3. Went to "astronomy night" at T's school; although it was too cloudy to see Saturn (which was the plan), we got to see this amazing telescope with a GPS and saw photos taken with the telescope of Saturn, the moon, and other stuff. They'll reschedule for another evening when it's not so cloud-covered!

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

5/21/08

1. Nice trip to Target-I saved *so* much money! ;)

2. Lazy afternoon of reading the Book Club book--The Glass Castle--which I really enjoyed!

3. C's choir concert, which was a combination Middle School/High School. C. had a (tiny) solo, and did great; I also got to see several of my current and past tutoring students and the kids got to get a glimpse at what choir in HS will be like

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

5/20/08

1. Few extra minutes of sleeping in this morning and G. made lunches.

2. Elementary Science/Social Studies Learning Fair. So cute! I'm glad T. stuck it out and did this optional project.

3. Two good tutoring sessions. Sometimes things just go more smoothly than others, and I feel like I'm really helpful.

Monday, May 19, 2008

5/19/08

1. G home (correcting papers), which made it easier for me to run errands.

2. Last time this year working in the school library --it made me happy both because I like to work in the library, and because I don't like to work in the library! :)

3. Helped T finish his Learning Fair (Science Fair) project. For a project that was put together in a weekend (I dropped the ball), it turned out pretty nice, I think!

4. *Just* got an email from the mom of one of the students I tutor, letting me know that the student got a B on the last test--raising the course grade from a D+ to a C!

Sunday, May 18, 2008

5/18/08

1. FINALLY got some things moved around downstairs--and I cleaned so the rec room is usable again and the laundry room is not covered in lint!

2. M. has finally started singing on the Karaoke Revolution wii game--it is the cutest thing ever. She and C. were singing "Irreplaceable" and she did "Copa Cabana" with T...

3. C's purple hair and new haircut turned out cute.

4. Mom made it back home safely.

Saturday, May 17, 2008

5/17/08

1. First soccer game of T's that I got to see this year! They lost, but T. did a good job.

2. Got the radon reduction system installed. Our levels were 10.3 or 19.1 (depending on the test system) and the installer predicted they'd drop to below 1 pCi/L in 48 hours; this is something I've worried about since we bought the house--I'm so glad we're using our Economic Stimulus check to fix it.

3. Trip to Costco; saved $60 in coupons!

4. Sort of "date" with G. I rode out with him to work to pick up papers, and then we got coffee

5. Grilled out for supper; BBQ ribs, grilled veggies, watermelon--it felt like summer!

6. Achieved 100% "great" on my second Karaoke Revolution song

Friday, May 16, 2008

5/16/08

1. M's doing great. It's nearly impossible to "make" her rest, though.

2. OK, I'm trying to find some good in mom's bad inspection report; maybe that she didn't move in before finding out that the foundation is screwed up? maybe that it's one of those things that the seller has to fix before selling (no one will loan you money on a house with that kind of defect)

3. C's soccer game. Although they lost by 2 points, it was to a team that had previously crushed them, and it was a really fun game to watch!

4. Custard out after the soccer game.

Thursday, May 15, 2008

5/15/08

1. Got a perfect score on my favorite song on American Idol karaoke for the wii.

2. Bought plants for the mini garden (tomato, jalapeno, tomatillo and italian parsley) and seeds for mom to "drop" next door (zucchini and pumpkin); found adorable "rock star" Chuck Taylors for M. for $5, and stopped at Caribou for coffee to find that a new bank in town was paying for all coffee that morning, so ours was free!

3. After interest rates rose the last two days, they dropped today, and mom was able to switch lenders and get a better rate (and better service).

4. Although I spent two hours in the ER with M., she didn't need stitches, and the only "prescription" is to rest for two days. She's soooo tough!

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

5/14/08

1. Mom accepted the counter-offer (not much different--just moving the closing date up a week)!

2. Chiropractic appointment--and I got my inserts!

3. T. had a half day, so we went out for lunch

4. Fun walking around mom's house-to-be and making plans for what to change

5. No tutoring tonight (both rescheduled)

6. Attended information session on the Nursing Program at UWM; it's not going to work for me to do it (they won't count any of my undergrad credits, and it would cost a fortune); seems odd to say that's a thing that made me happy, but I have so many possible things to do with "the rest of my life" that it's kind of a relief to eliminate one. :(

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

5/13/08

1. Mom's offer was accepted on the house next door.

2. T's lost jacket (his North Face--worn once!) was found.

3. Double tutoring and a tip ;)

Monday, May 12, 2008

5/12/08

1. Mom's doctor appointment--no more appointments until September!!!

2. Although our second radon test came back almost twice as high (10.3, then 19.1), we found someone to fix it for just over $1000--less than I feared.

3. Mom wrote an offer on the house next door. I'm almost afraid to hope...

Sunday, May 11, 2008

5/11/08

1. Orange pineapple muffin and mocha from Caribou for breakfast!

2. New stainless steel cooking utensils

3. A Rachael Ray Garbage Bowl (to use for compost)

4. American Idol Karaoke for the wii (and playing it all day, despite having lost my voice from a cold--my poor, patient family!)

5. Qdoba for supper

6. Having my mom here for Mother's Day!

Saturday, May 10, 2008

5/10/08

1. G ran the local fund-raising 5K race for our school district. He did great---time of 25:20, and that's with running half of it talking to friends!

2. Coffee out with one of my dearest IRL friends. We've both had busy weeks--okay, MONTHS and haven't had as much time to catch up.

3. Shopping at the mall with C. I really DO love shopping with her because she's got such a perfect teenaged body and all the cute, trendy styles look so good on her!

4. Got the rest of my flowers in. (please oh please oh please don't let it frost...)

Friday, May 9, 2008

5/9/08

1. Mother's Day tea in M's kindergarten class. SO cute!

2. Got some cleaning done--not as much as I'd hoped, but SOME.

3. Out for supper w/ G's folks; I'm so lucky to not only have a great mom, but great in-laws

4. C's Musical--lots of fun! The kids were so cute and looked like they were having so much fun.

Thursday, May 8, 2008

5/8/08

1. I have a 10 year old son! (how did that happen?)

2. Mom's gotten pre-approved to make an offer on the house next door. All crossed-fingers and positive vibes appreciated.

3. Coffee with the fourth grade moms. This is such a GREAT group of women and while I think I'll only go for an hour, I always end up staying for two!

4. M had a surprise playdate and was SO excited.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

5/7/08

1. Out for coffee with mom. Yummy Caribou!

2. Shopping with mom. She bought a whole "retiree wardrobe" and she bought me some new clothes for Mother's Day (I know--she's MY mother, so why is she buying me a gift?).

3. Learned that the house next door dropped its price--again. Still not at a price Mom can afford, but getting closer. At least a possibility. Anyone know a quick way to make $20K? :)

4. Cuteness from M. She was building with the geo-mags and said that one thing she'd made was "invincible" but another one was "vulnerable". Had Grandma laughing!

5. Tutoring canceled for tonight! Yes, I need the money, but I *did* work an extra hour this week... ;)

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

5/6/08

1. Got the wrapping done on T's birthday gifts.

2. Trimmed bushes/shrubs around the house (they were looking really sloppy) and planted echinacea from MamaFitz.

3. Mom's doctor appointment--follow-up to her surgery. All looks well!

4. Extra tutoring session today; rough to have three in one night, but the extra money is nice.

Monday, May 5, 2008

5/5/08

1. Chiropractic appointment. Everyone should see a chiropractor!

2. Delightful, decadent nap... I never really nap, but I was feeling so crappy yesterday and last night that I couldn't keep my eyes open this afternoon. The nap helped!

3. Beautiful weather! It's impossible to be in a bad mood when the sun's out and it's WARM outside.

Sunday, May 4, 2008

5/4/08

1. Finally dry enough (and warm enough) for yard work! Some transplanting of flowers (nice exchange w/ MamaFitz), seeding of lawn, planting flowers, etc.

2. Nice trip running errands with C. We hit the mall, Michael's and Target.

3. Out for T's birthday. Although his actual birthday isn't until Thursday, with C. in the musical, we won't have a chance to go out as a family for a LONG time, so we decided to go tonight! Yummy stir fries/fajitas at BD's Mongolian BBQ.

Saturday, May 3, 2008

5/3/08

1. M's last gymnastics class; parents get to watch. Although she enjoys it, I think she's "outgrown" the gymnastics program. She is more into the social thing! I think she'll end up doing soccer as her sport, starting in fall

2. I had a good night's sleep (dropped the sleep number bed another 10) and woke up w/o back or hip pain!

3. Yummy Cuban food for supper--Ropa Vieja, black beans, rice and fried plantains!

Friday, May 2, 2008

5/2/08

1. Chiropractic appointment; found out that our insurance covers 80% of custom orthotic inserts. Oh, how pitiful is that? Can you say, "I'm old" any more humiliating way than, "I wear orthotic inserts"? Maybe "I'm so excited that my insurance covers 80% of custom orthotic inserts". ugh!

2. Got my glasses re-fitted. They'd been sliding down my nose and had been annoying me. Now they fit again!

3. Nice lunch at the mall with the K4 group. It's so nice to unwind at the end of the week with a great group of women (and their great kids...)

4. Had a "date" with G! True, it involved a trip to Lowe's and Best Buy, but it was also nice to site and enjoy the first iced mocha of the season while it was POURING rain outside.

Thursday, May 1, 2008

5/1/08

1. Bought annuals at Home Depot! I'm not foolish enough to plant them yet (we've had below-freezing temps) but they're BOUGHT!

2. Got SOMEWHAT caught up on my DVR'ed TV shows. I was down to only 3% remaining on recording space, so had to watch a bunch. I'm back up to 21% recording space, so it can record the important Thursday night shows.

3. Phone call about tutoring this summer! I don't always get tutoring jobs in the summer, and they're usually sporadic at best, so this is great!

4. A completely overwhelmingly generous surprise from the best friends in the world. Four families bought us the coolest collection of gift certificates--most for food. I was so floored, and so touched--Mom, too. We both started crying.
